Week 12 Animation research and practice

Work portfolio

Pinocchio and Willow

So I started of my process by researching characters from books which I could then eventually re create in a different way. So my first intentions was to find a character which hadn’t already been created visually but I found this to be difficult to find because I didn’t know many characters who hadn’t already been created. So I ended up with choosing the character Pinocchio. I really liked the idea of changing the character almost completely but still using ideas and inspiration from the character Pinocchio this then gave me the stepping stone for the development process in which I started to sketch up a character and research more ways I could alter the character. I then eventually thought of the idea of reversing the characters ability to turn into a human. So I thought I should make it so the character starts out as a young boy and if he was to do something evil or bad, he will start to turn into wood. Depending on how evil he was would turn him into would quicker but the more time goes by he would slowly turn back into his original form as a young boy. If he was too evil and reached his max stage he would become a wooden tree like creature which rampages. The more he turns into this tree he finds himself losing control of his mind.

So after developing this new idea I started to think about the stages so I wanted to do a stage where we see him as a young boy then a stage where he is in the middle of turning so he would have branches and wood coming out of his body. Then finally the last stage would show him being this huge tree like creature that has roots and branches twisting around his body.

After doing more research into the development I found that there are characters who have companions with them, so I looked into the idea of having a companion for the creature. Which then lead me to come up with the idea of making it have an owl which follows him round and guides him to safety if he is in danger. The owl would have its own personality and is able to understand the feelings the creature is going through.

I believe these characters that I have created will be a good step for the next part of the production which is making them into 3d models with animations which would be ready for a game. The reason why I wanted to have the animations link to game because it links with my essay which talks about the differences between the production in the game industry and animation industry. I decided to choose to do this because I thought it would be a good contrast to the original film Pinocchio in which my main character is based upon.

Plus original I had the idea of basing the character around the primitive age but as ive further developed the characters I found that id prefer to have to characters set in the modern times. I feel my research may have made me change my mind a few times with the development direction.

Name: Pinocchio

Age: 21

Name of companion: Willow

Pet: Owl

Final look for character 1

Stage one I created the facial features with clay to help me get an understanding of a 3 dimensional look of the character which will help me move to the 3d computer modelling stage. I liked the style with his hair but I found when I used clay it was hard to get right. The eyes also was a difficult process to get right so I mainly sculpted the face structure.

My character also ended up being slim and tall. I liked the idea of making him this young person who is about to turn into an adult this is because I wanted to make him seem mature enough.

Stage 1

Stage 2

Stage 2 of the character we find the characters head and shoulder being the main changes to when he is turning into this creature. I made it so that we see this chunk of wood bursting out of his head and branches growing out of one of his shoulders. His personality would be slightly more evil at this point. The reason he has such big bags under his eyes is because he can’t sleep due to the transformation.

Stage 3

Stage 3 was all about making the character much more bigger, at this point he is at his strongest. I ended up making it so that he his face is skull like aswell. I found when I was creating him that it made him look more dangerous rather than having him with bold eyes.

Character 2

Next character is the owl. I decided to name the owl Willow because of its love for trees. I created a small sculpture for the character to get the size proportions right when compared to the other character. This will help me further develop the work in the post production stage. It also ended up being a long eared owl which I thought would be perfect to be the companion.

Concept art

Here I created different sketches and art pieces to help with the development process for the characters. When creating the art for the owls I found work from the past which I then used as references to create new pieces drawings for the second character. I found using ink gave the work a creepy look to the work which is what I had hoped to achieve because this gave an impression that the owl is this dark mysterious animal.

Colour palette

Here are the colours I would use to further develop the characters. I like how soft and natural this colours look and I think it would work well with the characters.

Soft Vanilla

Celtic moore

Leafy cottage

I then looked at trying to mix different colours using simular colours on which I had found to see if they do work well together or not. This will help me decide if the colours do work together.

I found the top one to be my favourite choice of colours to work with and thought that they will go well together for blending.

Relates to essay

The work relates to my essay because I wanted to take a character from a book/film and then re create it and then try to adjust it to suit a game production. My essay is all about the difference between the two industries and it has helped me understand how to create my character for a game production by using game animation instead of film animation which my character was based upon.

I really like the contrast on which I have developed of changing the character from turning into a boy to wood, similar to being how im changing it from a film character to a game character.

Also my essay talks about the realism contrast between film animation models to game animated models. This is because of the rending performance on which a film can run compared to game. The rending in a game is continuously rending meaning the performance runs smoother which allows the animators to make the models have more polygons in the model making the model look more realistic. In a film it has to be rendered before it is realized and because of the short time film studios have it means the animators would have to use less polygons so that the film can render quicker, so the animator makes the model in its best quality with fewer polygons to use.

Whats next in the production

My next step for my production work is either to continue to make the portfolio much more bigger with more 3 dimensional models. I would have more definitive pieces for how the stages look and have more ideas for the clothing that they where.

Or my other idea for the post production is to create the characters 3d computer generated which will then be ready to be animated for a game. I will then have a show reel which shows game animations of the character performing different actions. I found this to be something that character designers and game animators would need to get a job in the industry. I also found within my research that game industries are interested in seeing creature designs and models because it allows them to show more creativity and the character isn’t just a generic human.

Week 11 Animation research and practice

Essay feedback

I revived my essay feedback which I found really useful because it went through the areas of the essay I need to re do and edit. One of the main things was possibly re wording my essay so that it fit the context that I was using in my essay. This will make sure the words I use don’t drift and not relate to the work I am producing. Another major issue was how opinionated I was with my work, there were a lot of opinions used which didn’t have the correct references to back them up which didn’t give the academic research I was after with my work. I need to edit out and re do parts that drift from the question and reference the points that I make about the production. I also found that I need to focus more on the pipeline because it is the main point in my introduction which I drift apart from using.

Visuals

Here are drawing process I have made during the production of the model to help me sculpt the work together. For my character I had decided to make him slim and tall with a very unique hair style. I had chosen that hair style to make the character to stand out more and boost its look.

Model development

Model

This is the model production of the main character. I found the head was difficult to get right, the face also being a tricky process. So I drew up new ideas and sculptured more into the work and ended up finding a skull like feature in which the character model had gained so I researched up skull images so that I could try and replicate the skull for the eyes of the character. I also originally started the sculpture of being the first stage and then moved to the second stage and then the third. I did this so that I could document the process and get a feel to how the character would look when it fully transforms.

In the pictures you will find me changing the head constantly to the try and get the best look as I could.

Body parts

Next I started to think more about the characters body parts. I then decided that I should try and create clay models to help me get a stronger understanding on how it would look in 3d for the post production. So I drew up sketch ideas which all had some wood growing out from them.

The arm

I found the arm tricky to sculpture due to the amount of branches I wanted near the shoulder part of the arm. I also found some sticks which I used to try and help me get the look I wanted for the arm model. I really liked the outcome for the arm because it started of smooth and straight which then changed to have a wooden look to it.

Leg

Next was the leg. This part I wanted to make the leg look more like a creature so I began making disfigurements with the toes and I added branches to twist round the leg. I think when I added the stick, it resembled a bone like structure to the work.

Research

Skull features. When I was developing the face for the third stage of the character, I stumbled on an issue with getting his face right and ended up having a skull like face which I found to look appealing for the character. I liked the blacked out eyes being apart of the work because it could resemble holes being in a tree.

Summary of character idea.

The character that I am making will be based of the iconic character pinochio. After looking at the characters traits and personality I wanted to alter the character in my own way and twist it to make it more realistic from being from a film ready for game animation tests.

So after spending time coming up with different sketch ideas and figuring out how I was going to create the character I looked at how the character pinochio wanted to be a real boy so I thought that I could reverse this and make it so that it was a boy(teen) who ends up turning into a tree(wood) and he would turn into wood the more he would do something bad such simular to how pinochio would lie and his nose would then grow longer.

This then meant that I would have to create stages for how my character would look in each stage so I cut it to 3 seperate stages with him turning into wood. The first stage you would see him as a young boy like the image below. Slim, long body and rugged clothes.

Next was thinking how the character would look in its second stage. Which was all about combining the last stage and first stage which meant it would have simular looks from both. He would be still a young boy but he would have wood and branches starting to grow out of him.

Then the last stage was all about the final transportation. This meant that he would be fully made of wood after being a young boy. His legs and arms would have long twisted branches.

Then his look was the difficult part so I thought If I find the shape of how I want him to look I can work on creating the model of him which will help give me more of an idea on how he would look.

This drawing I decided to gjve the character a skinny look to it with much larger eyes. I felt it started to lose the realisim and didnt match the ideas I had for the character so I kept looking for how I could develop it.

This image shows the stages of the charactrr design which where the character also slowly increases size when he is in the process of changing into the wood like creature.

This drawing was a small test to try and find a pose and turn it into a tree like creature and I found it to be really useful becuase it helped me think more about the shape of the character.

The bottom to images were the ones I felt most comfortable with developing, I felt that is how I wanted my character to look in its third form into turning into this big tree like fugure.

Model images

The model making was the next stage in my progress for developing the charachters 3 dimentional look. This will help me develop more drawings and work for my portfolio for the further production of the character.

I also carved areas on the model to get rid of any uneeded clay or to add depth to certain areas of the piece.

Once I got the smooth look to the character model I started to alter the areas of the body by changing the shape of the muscles and adding more to the fugure. This figure then gave me the base to add onto it for my character stages.

Once I had got the clay all away round the model I started to press into the clay to try and shape it better to make the figure look smoother.

Next part I started adding muscles to the skelington. I needed to make sure that the portions were right and that it was realitic as I could get it to be.

Here is the skelington again but I have edited it even further by adding more joints and making it longer fitting to the model size I want for my character.

I started of creating the skelington for my character out of wire. This meant that I had more control with the stance and the clay when creating the character. I learnt previously that clay is very difficult to use unless there is something giving it a structure. Plus I learnt from my research that professional studios also use a simular technique when creating models so that they can keep the model supported better.

Pet/Creature

Next part was creating the creature/pet that I wanted to do but I started to wonder if it was nessorary becuase I had 3 stages of the first character which meant 3 different visual looks to the character so I decided to gain feedback before further developing the pet.

At first I was thinking on creating it to be a pet which followed him around as a companion and it would be an eagle. But becuase of the style of the tree I felt that an owl would fit the character alot better and give of a stronger image becuase of the meaning behind owls.

Week 9 Animation research and practice

Visuals

Model development

This part of the development stage I wanted to sculpt the first stages head and the seconds stages head and shoulders. This would then leave me to create the final model with the whole body because of it being the biggest stage. The face I found to be tricky to sculpture because I had to try and get the facial proportions correct. I managed to get the main face structure right but I found the eyes hard to put into place. I found the eyes to not look right once they were in the model so I left the eye sockets out and focused more on the hair shape and the nose, mouth structures.

This video below I have found will help me develop the face sculpture to try and make it even more realistic. To do this I would need small metal tools which I can then carefully sculpt into the face.

Next I found sticks and wood that I could find outside. I thought that by doing this it would help me develop an understanding on how the wood grows and how I could incorporate this in my own work to try and make the model look more realistic.

Research

Character 1

For my first character I wanted to make the final stage the final clay model. This was biggest I thought it showed off the character in full and at its most unique form. So I looked online and in books to see if I could see how other people had created clay sculptures for films and games. I really like the way that they sculpture the work, I found there work to be really realistic.

This video shows me how to go into detail using the clay. I like this video tutorial because the character he is making is from a game. He uses a small metal tool which is able to edge the clay which creates a rough texture onto the clay which makes a realistic look when creating the hair or markings on the skin.

Character 2

For my 2nd character Willow I started to think about how it would look in 3d. So I found images of sculptures other people had made of birds. This will help develop my character and give me an insight on how my owl should look and what features it should have.

Week 8 Animation research and practice

Drawings

The drawings mainly consist of the development stages of creating my character. I drew up eyes so that I could try and find a eye style I liked for the character. I also had drew up other body like shapes just to make sure I had got body for the character right before going further into the development.

In these sketches we can see the development of the all the stages together. I created more facial expressions for the first stage and made a few more sketches for the face of the third stage so that I could model in the upcoming weeks.

Model development

So for the model development I brought clay and wire to start my model. I found the wire to be really useful to create a skeleton for the piece, it managed to hold the clay in place and I was also able to move its body around making it easier for me to alter the character models pose.

When I was created the model I used the sketches as guidance to start to develop features onto the basic figure shape that I had developed. I found from my research that by creating small sausage like shapes I was able to create the muscle look to the model. Once I had attached the clay onto the skeleton I then began to smooth down the body so that the clay would stick and stay together for when it hardens up. This was so that when the clay is dry it dosnt fall apart.

Research

Here I looked at design sheets that I found online, to help me develop my characters body. This will also help me thinking on how the body would change with the stage system.

Image result for character design

I think I managed to get find the shapes for my sculptures so in the upcoming weeks I will start creating more sculptures which will include the arms and legs of the final stage, the face of the first and second stage and also I will continue the develop the main body of the third stage making it look bigger and stronger then the other stages,

Week 7 Animation research and practice

Character development

Research for portfolio

This week I went onto thinking on the 2nd character I could have for my work. I liked the idea of having a companion for my main character. I figured that by doing the 3 stages and having a 2nd character it would add more to my portfolio work. So I looked at different animals in the previous weeks and found I wanted it to be a bird of some sort. So I looked at images online until I figured on an animal to go with. I then eventually chose an owl because I thought It would be a strong character that would work well with a wood like creature. So I looked at designs and other peoples work to gather more ideas for how the character would look.

Image result for bird concept artImage result for owl concept artRelated image

Types of owl

I then found these three types of owl. I really liked the small owl and the long eared owl the most so I decided to draw up sketches of both to see on which one Id end up liking more.

Image result for owl photoImage result for owl photoImage result for long eared owl

Visuals

Below show a few sketches I had drawn up of my process and I also did concept art of the two types of owls I liked the most to see on which one would be the better choice. I then decided that I wanted to choose the long eared owl more because of its size. I figured that the bird needed to be a nice size to fit well with the main character otherwise it wouldn’t look very good if it was too small.

The owl will be called Willow and she is female. When she sees the creature she will fly onto his shoulder to help guide him out of danger. The reason on why she chooses to help the tree creature is because her back story is about her losing her family to a fire and that she needs a friend.

She is wise and calm and will pick up small objects/creatures if need be. She is able to communicate to the tree creature by landing onto its shoulder and connecting to its roots she can send messages to his head.

Visuals

Below are early sketches of the character production that I have created. I have also drawn the size comparisons between the different stages so that people can get a better idea on how big the creature gets. This also shows the shapes and styles I sketched up to try as many different ones as I can until I found the ones I liked. I decided to go with a slim build for the first stage because I felt it would work well with how it transforms into the second stage it would have the branches growing out of him and it would look like a bone structure inside of him.

The third stage I wanted the shape of the creature to be this big strong like creature. I wanted it to be the biggest body type of the stages so I choose to use a bold body shape with huge arms and medium sized legs.

Essay introduction

This essay is to look at the production pipelines within the animation industry, it discusses what the pipelines are and how they are used within the game and film industries. I will be talking about the comparison between the industries, the reasons why they have to be different and how I will include them in my practical work. The pipeline production is the process of creating a project, for example if you were creating a film or a game the project would have small segments on where different teams of people would be specialising in different parts of the work: for the production there will be a team who create the story of the sequence- they will be looking on how to script the work and bringing the story to life, then there would be a character design team who look at developing the character for screen and what personality traits it would have. The character design part is what I will be focussing on so that I can extract the design methods in film and games to see how I can use it for ideas to help create my project.

Week 6 Animation research and practice

Character development

For my character design process I researched more of the character I wanted to re develop. Which I ended up going with the character Pinocchio, which I know has already been visually designed but I feel that it has the potential to be pushed even further which will help me with my work.

I thought about the concept that Pinocchio as a character is and looked at how to alter what happens to him as a character. I then eventually thought of the idea where instead of it being a puppet turning into a boy it will be a man turning into puppet or a piece of wood. Almost like it is slowly changing into wood as he does certain things. So I looked at how his body could develop from being a person and then visually looking more tree like similar to how the character Groot looks from guardians of the galaxy.

Image result for groot character design work

Like this piece of work which I have found online which shows the tree like creature. I think it’ll be nice to add this concept to my character development because it will bring something new to the concept for the work.

Below I started to sketch out ideas on how he’ll look and what features he could potentially have. I needed to do this so that I could start to develop more ideas on how id want my character to look and what shape it’ll have. One of the shapes I really liked the idea of is making the character really slim and tall which would work well with the tree concept for the work. I think that I need to keep developing designs and keep sketching out more ways to make the character more suitable. I was also thinking that if he lies or kills someone he would then start changing more into wood keeping it similar to how the original story had it but changing it to how id like him to be instead.

Below is the human anatomy which Ill be using as reference for helping create my designs for my work.

Image result for human anatomy art reference

Next I started to look at how the shape of trees are formed and how I could develop this into my character. So I started to look at how tree branches are and how I could add the tree like form to the character. I might also have it so that the character has different stages. One being where he starts out as a human then half human half tree then the final stage will be where he is fully wooden. This will hopefully demonstrate a nice development with my work and will help me add more work. Also looking at the texture aswell.

I also hope  to create the creature/pet with this character so that there will be even more work development for my portfolio.

Summary

This character that I have created will be based off the character Pinocchio and further developed. I want to take a pre existing character and develop it even further and altering what others might of thought it being like before. I want to make it so that the character has three different stages which develops from being human to becoming a tree like creature. The character will be looking for answers with his companion to find out how to be human again.

Character is a slim build character with a tall height. I want him to grow branches and tree like features the more he kills or lies. This will show the stages of him becoming more into some sort of creature and will eventually mean that he will be more evil because of this. The more nonhuman he gets the more his personality changes.
